The third installment of Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire series is its most action packed, both in terms of fight scenes and human-vampire-werewolf lovin’. In Eclipse, the vampiric Cullen clan and the werewolves–their sworn enemies–unite against an army of “newborn” vampires, whose remnants of human blood in their veins makes them stronger and more uncontrollable, causing a string of murders in the Seattle area. They’ve been created by the vengeful vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, taking over for Rachelle Lefevre), still keen on destroying human Bella (Kristen Stewart). Thus, Bella is under careful watch, and her undead love Edward (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf best friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) spend a lot of time arguing over who is the better man for her. (In one hilarious scene where Bella’s freezing and only Jacob has the lupine body heat to warm her, he looks over at Edward and cracks, “I am hotter than you.” Go Team Jacob!) But there’s more at the heart of the triangle than love: Bella, against Edward’s warnings, doesn’t want to grow older than him and would willingly give up contact with her parents, the chance to grow old with children, and more to be turned into a bloodthirsty vampire. (Jacob’s trump card is that Bella wouldn’t have to give up her mortality to be with him.) But the unfolding of this love triangle is even clumsier than it was on the page; you’re never really convinced Bella has romantic feelings for Jacob, even during their climactic kiss on top of the mountain. This is likely to confuse non-readers of the book series, as Stewart emotes nothing that intones there’s a real competition here (clearly, she’s Team Edward).Pattinson, on the other hand, appears to have overcome his awkwardness to become a much cooler Edward; Howard, while missing Lefevre’s mischief as Victoria, brings her own touch of soft-spoken manipulation; and Billy Burke, as Bella’s father Charlie, continues to steal every scene he’s in. The other Cullens also get far more play here, notably Rosalie (Nikki Reed), whose revealing back story is touching and tragic, and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone), who trains everyone in combat and who, halfway through the movie, adopts a sudden Southern accent that he didn’t have before, once it’s revealed he was a Confederate soldier (on a side note, it’s mentioned in the books that Jasper can calm the emotions of others, but that trait isn’t used in the movie). The climactic fight scene is well staged by director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy); the violence, while not bloody, is still more abundant and disturbing than in the previous films; and the sex, while not actually happening between anyone (yet), is certainly on everyone’s mind (but Edward wants to get married first). During the Teen Choice Awards last week, three Twilight Saga: Eclipse stars were kind enough to pose for pictures with lucky EM.org reader Shannon, even helping with the picture taking! Shannon writes that–

I saw Taylor Lautner sitting up at the front couches at the TCAs so I snuck past like 4 or 5 security guards and went down to take a picture with Taylor and I was like “Can you do a funny face?” and he’s like “I’m not good at them” and I was like “No, you can do it” and he was like “Like what?”

…he was like “Like what?” and I’m like “Just do anything” and then I was about to take the picture when I’m like “shoot I don’t know if I can get both of us” so randomly I didn’t even see Alex Meraz and he was like “I’ll take it for you guys!” so of course I do a funny face and Taylor doesn’t and then I’m like “oh can I have a picture with you!”-(to alex) and he’s like “Yeah have Taylor take it” but Taylor turned around so he’s like “Nevermind, here sit on Booboo’s lap” so he literally pulled me down to sit on Booboo’s lap and they were all laughing and he took the picture of us and then I’m like “Can I have one with you too?”-
(to Kiowa) and so Alex was like “come here” and put me on top of his lap!!!! and I took two pictures with Kiowa and I felt terrible cause I didn’t even ask Booboo for a picture cause I just forgot and the entire cast, Ashley, Bronson, Jackson, Justin were all on the same row to the right of Kiowa but the commercials were over and the show was starting up again so I left but they were so nice I seriously could’ve just stayed on their laps!! I’m so mad I went back but their awesome! I love them!!!!

The Runways–for which Twilight Saga: Eclipse star Kristen Stewart cut her hair prior to filming Eclipse, much to the dismay of the studio and the resulting wig in Eclipse–has been released a full week early on iTunes.
I’m not sure if it’s a slip-up or not, but you can now buy it for $14.99 on iTunes a full week before its official July 20th release date.

Kristen Stewart plays legendary rocker Joan Jett in The Runaways, alongside Twilight co-star Dakota Fanning as Cherie Curie. Overall it received mildy favorable reviews, with a 70% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Moore from the Orlando Sentinel praises it–

A well-acted and vivid re-creation of a dark, downbeat era when “girls don’t play electric guitar,” and you had to be someone pretty tough and pretty special to try it.

The Harry Potter Alliance has been hard at work trying to earn the votes necessary to score $250,000 in cash for very worthy goals through a competition Chase is running currently.

We’re teaming up with common fandom to support this effort, and encourage you to vote: the HP Alliance is neck-in-neck for first place, and if they succeed they can expand their effort of donating books (55,000 already) to communities in need, support LGBT rights and if all goes well, also form an online coalition of fan sites such as ours to encourage efforts to help with places in need in the future, such as Haiti where the Alliance has already raised a great deal of money on its own.

The Twilight books were a source that kick-started my relationship with my girlfriend. Three and half great years later, I managed to get my manager at the movie theater I work at to allow me to ask her to marry me at the Eclipse midnight premiere. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment and crowd.

Xavier Samuel, who plays Riley in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, surprised theater-goers yesterday at the Union Square Regal Theater in New York City.

Here are some pictures I took at the Union Square Regal Theater on July 3 2010. Riley was our guest. He said hello to the audience and asked if we were Team Victoria. It was awesome. He seems really excited to see all the fans! He didn’t stay the whole time but he was super nice!!
