Eclipse eclipse eclipse0001 280x225 BoxOfficeMojo.com: Odds Are Eclipse wont Reach the Heights of New Moon eclipse news BoxOfficeMojo.com has a new article giving readers a preview of the Twilight Saga – Eclipse.

Besides giving us the release dates, studio description, etc,  they also examine how Eclipse may fare in the box office, and whether or not it will surpass New Moon -

After Twilight, the first entry in The Twilight Saga before the franchise was called “The Twilight Saga,” became a box office sensation in 2008, ultimately grossing $192.8 million, its sequel, New Moon, was dubbed one of the most-anticipated movies of 2009. It did not disappoint, drawing massive crowds out of the gate and finishing the year with nearly $290 million and counting. While the first two movies had pre-Thanksgiving launches, the third, Eclipse, has been aligned with the Independence Day holiday, in part, because the next Harry Potter reclaimed that series’ historical pre-Thanksgiving slot. Eclipse is scheduled for Wednesday, June 30, or only seven months after New Moon.

Odds are that Eclipse won’t reach the heights of New Moon, given the history of closely-timed, serialized sequels. The Matrix Revolutions, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and even Back to the Future Part III all grossed significantly less than their predecessors. When a second movie is hotly-anticipated after the first movie’s success, it’s highly unlikely that the next picture will even maintain the momentum (The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter being notable exceptions), and signs from New Moon‘s run suggest that The Twilight Saga will follow the pattern. New Moon had one of the biggest openings of all time, was extremely front-loaded and probably wasn’t as well-liked as the first Twilight: Box Office Mojo readers gave it a “C+,” compared to the first movie’s “B.” Also, the vampire fad could show fatigue by the summer, given the flood of vampire-themed TV shows, movies and paraphernalia in the market.

However, it would be silly to bet against Eclipse‘s chances at being a big box office draw in its own right. The Twilight brand is so strong right now that even a massive drop-off would mean a near blockbuster run for Eclipse, there are few other offerings this summer that will be as attractive to younger females, and there’s always the possibility that it pulls a Harry Potter in terms of longevity. With no trailer available at publication time, it remains to be seen how Summit will up the ante in its marketing campaign.

In the words of Victoria from TwilightWe shall see

Well this is a bunch of crap! Twilight a B and new moon a C+?? what the heck? New moon was loads better than twilight in my opinion. and how could it make less? it's probably the most favorited book from the series. it's gonna be BIG…

and i can't wait i'm about to tinkle my pants.. just like the rest of the millions of twilight fans anticipating this movie

  • nemesis_CarolinaCullenCoven!nH

*sighs* agree!! first w/ NM they were giving us all these spoiliers and now NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING!!!! Summit extremes are not good >.>….

  • Selenaaa

    EVERYONE:

IF ECLIPSE DOESN'T DO WELL, THAN THAT MEANS NO MONEY FOR A BREAKING DAWN(S) DO WE WANT THAT??!? no WE DON'T! SO WHEN IT COMES OUT SEE IT TILL YOU GO BANKRUPT SO WE CAN HAVE THE BEST BREAKING DAWN OR DAWNS POSSIBLE!!!

  • seriouslysoobsessed

BAH! we'll show them. eclipse is going to be the biggest twilight film and breaking dawn will be even bigger! they. don't. even. know!

  • I'm Addicted. Get Over It.

LOL I will be seeing Eclipse a million times no matter what.

I guess your right. NM was HUUUGE. But I think we will have a better idea once some trailers come out…. which better be really freaking soon by the way! haha

    I'm so dang nervous!..
I hope Eclipse does well. I hope everyone's just as excited as they were for New Moon!!

  • lestat516

    go go go eclipse!!

  • enviro

I know, I'm nervous too . . . all this talk about how dark it's going to be, etc. I hate to say it but I don't think it's going to be as big as NM was. I liked the first movie better because of the better connection between B&E, even though the 2nd was better in a technical way. If they get back to the chemistry in the 1st, Eclipse could be awesome. If it's all about the vampire army or something . . . well maybe I'll only see it twice instead of the four times I saw NM. :)

  • enviro

That's a very good point. The build up is way less because they are so close together. I don't think it will really hit until after NM is out in DVD. So that may make the opening less huge but if it's a great movie, we will have all summer to see it — good point! There will be much more Edward so that's all good anyway!

  • Twi Cullen Black

do they consider dates when they write this. Pre-teen (let's say this is a rough average of who reads the books) fans swamped the box office when New Moon opened. This was on a school night, and the turn out was such. Now, Eclipse is opening in the summer, meaning all those fans won't have school the next day. And yet they say that eclipse won't have the same revenue. These guys are hilarious. Obviously, they don't pay attention to miniscule details. I love 'em.

  • vampdazzle

yes I hope that in Eclipse, Rob gets to show why we all have fallen in love with his character! : )

  • Encourage The Monster!

Yes, because there sure was veeery little Edward in NM. He was out of character then-in my opinion, wearing old fashioned clothes and was crabby and such… lol

  • otiter

    nnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • June1994

ECLIPSE!!!! My favorite because Edward Proposes AHHHH!!! I'm gonna see this at least a couple of times my family is definitely gonna watch with me, they kinda have to it's my birthday 3 days before eclipse comes out in theatres hehe so that's one of my birthday presents…Watching my beloved twilight saga's eclipse!!! Can't Wait <3

  • Nay (Team Up Against The Wall)

Obviously they don't know Twilight fans very well. Everyone will come and support this movie too and I personally can't wait for all the fighting scenes. I wanna see some Cullens and wolves come out to play already.

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

i think this time will be interesting to say the least….this is the movie where things really start to move into the action direction…so yea i agree with u there…it will attract attention…but heres the deal…if only the twihards see it…it will break blockbuster status…and all the kids will be out of school…so they will see it just cuz…if summit is smart they have anticipated the drop and thats why they havent released the trailer yet…theyre not gonna do the massive buildup like last time because the time frame is too close…theyre gonna hit us with a blitz come march or april and ride the wave of the runaways and remember me all the way into june…its actually a good strategy…OMG I think ive figured it out…I REALLY THINK THATS WHY WE HAVENT SEEN a TRAILER!…*goes and tells everyone*

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

luv ur avi, luv ur name, luv ur opinion. thank u and goodnight.

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

OMG twifan…i think i have figured out the reasoning behind the drought…heres the deal on Eclipse…if only the twihards see it…it will break blockbuster status…and all the kids will be out of school when it comes out…so they will see it just cuz…if summit is smart they have anticipated the dropoff in hype (among non-fans) and thats why they havent released the trailer yet…theyre not gonna do the massive buildup like last time because the time frame is too close…theyre gonna hit us with a blitz come march or april and ride the wave of the runaways and remember me all the way into june…plus now they can temper everything together like a real blitz…remember me, the runaways, NM DVD, Eclipse Trailer…i think thats it! lets see what happens…its actually a good strategy…*goes and tells everyone*

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

i swear the leg hitch is the star of the show… it should have its own movie.

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

plus we have substance…we ACTULLY READ!…one of the many reasons why this movie will do well and we rock.

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

naked!?!…the things u miss when u go on a break… dammit i gotta wait til BD to see rob naked…pwush…haha nevermind i get to see him in Remember Me and Bel Ami!…lol…ok carry on…haha

  • ICB *Sethward Saves the Day*

throw in a lil Nellan and Jackshley action and we have a whole franchise…lololol

  • BellasLoveFlippy

LMAO! That is a franchise I'd gladly pay to see.. hahaha

  • me

Absolutely! The love for the book series is what draws the audience, not the damn advertising. Movie tickets will sell out and screaming fans will line up for miles.

  • Small Town Cullen Girl

You are right. My friend just asked me the other day if we were going
at midnite again. It was a retorical question. Lol

    I totally agree!  The books are about E and B not action stuff.  Hopefully Slade brings 60% E and B, 20 % E and J, and 20 % battle /CGI stuff!  :)
