Eclipse News

The extremely awesome Larry411 has the latest box office numbers for Eclipse, as of Thursday August 26 -

UPDATE THURSDAY, AUGUST 26:

Box office numbers are in for Wednesday, August 25. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse took in another $71,270 from 557 locations for a per theater average of $128, representing a decrease of 5.5% from Tuesday. This adds up to a cumulative domestic total of $297,439,330 after 57 days in release. Adding in overseas returns of $380.6M gives Eclipse a current worldwide total of $678,039,330.

Theater counts for the week of Friday, August 27 – Thursday, September 2 reflect a decrease of 81 for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to 476 locations, dropping it from #18 to #20.

For those comparing the films in The Twilight Saga, at this point in its release history (after 57 days) New Moon had taken in $291,550,109. Eclipse is now at $297,439,330. Both films hit the $250M mark on the 16th day. The total domestic gross for New Moon was $296,623,634 (after 132 days). Eclipse has now broken that total by $816,696 (after 57 days). The film is now within striking distance of the elusive $300M mark. It needs about $2.56M to get to that number. It took New Moon 22 more days to earn an additional $2.56M after its 57th day, and Eclipse is clearly doing better. On the other hand, New Moon was in 724 theaters after 57 days while Eclipse is dropping to 476 locations tomorrow. Still, even after New Moon’s theater count had dropped to 444 (after 63 days) it still went on to take in another $3.8M. Therefore, it should take no more than one more month for Eclipse to earn another $2.6M and pass $300M.

Now wouldn’t be a bad time to start planning for your DVD release parties. The street dates for Twilight and New Moon were both on day 121 of their theatrical runs (Saturdays). Following that line of thinking, Eclipse’s 121st day will be October 28th, a Thursday. The following Saturday would be October 30th — Halloween weekend. On the other hand, sources have told me that Summit is planning for a holiday season release — some say November while others say Christmas time.

I can’t wait to hear about all the juicy extras on the Eclipse DVD/Blu-Ray! I don’t know about you .. but I’m hoping for A LOT of deleted scenes!

MovieMistakes.com has already begun a list of mistakes found in Eclipse! Don’t worry, they are nothing too bad. Most of it is just very trivial -

  • The newborns aren’t all “pretty” as vampires should be.
  • In the scene where Bella takes off on the motorcycle with Jacob, Edward’s eyes are golden. When Edward shows up at Bella’s house later that evening, they are black. His thirst wouldn’t have become so apparent so quickly.
  • The Cullens are watching a news report about the violence in Seattle. It is night time in the report, and the reporter says “this is CNN live.”. Cut to the Cullens watching the newscast, and it is daylight out. Forks and Seattle are both in western Washington, it could not be night in one place and day in the other.
  • In the scene where Alice & Charlie are talking on the steps outside Charlie’s house, they are standing still, but in the next shot they are walking down the steps
  • Just after Victoria has been killed, Edward goes over to Bella to bandage the cut she made on her arm, tying the fabric around her wrist. However, when Bella cut herself, it was on the inside of her elbow, not her wrist.
  • In the last scene where Edward and Bella are sitting in the sunny field, Edward is not sparkling
  • More after the break!

Even with Spain’s Wold Cup victory last week, The Twilight Saga:Eclipse still dominated the country in amazing volumes. It’s official. Eclipse has taken over Spain.

    Eclipse sweeps Spanish box office!

Last weekend was without a doubt Eclipse’s weekend. The movie took over 73% of the nation’s total box office. Not even Spain’s World Cup victory was able to make the smallest dent over the impressive figures of the third installment of The Twilight Saga, numbers that speak for themselves: over 1.34 million viewers and more than € 8,500,000 ($10,958,788.01 dollars in one weekend) were raised at the box office, which have made Eclipse the most successful and most watched film of 2010 in its first five days in theaters. The amazing commercial success of Eclipse confirms once again the loyal support from all the followers of the Twilight saga that keep enjoying the dangerous love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob.

    I smell world domination. ;)

According to Gossip Cop and The Hollywood Reporter, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is still going strong at the box office domestically and overseas totalling $456 million to date.

    Gossip Cop:

After two weekends in theaters, Eclipse continues to be strong.

The third installment in the Twilight Saga has earned $33.4 million this weekend at the box office in North America, bringing its total to $237 million domestically.

Internationally, the film took in another $81.1 million this weekend to bring its worldwide gross to $219 million.

That means, all across the globe, Eclipse has earned $456 million.

    THR:

“Eclipse,” the third installment of Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight” franchise defied toasty summer weather in France and the U.K., opening No. 1 in these two key markets. Summit said the U.K. take was a jaw-dropping $21 million from 523 locations (including previews), the market’s biggest opening of 2010 and about $2 million more than “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” grossed in its market bow late last year.

The France gross opening tally was $12.4 million from an unspecified number of locales, also the highest opening market take of this year. By weekend’s end, “Eclipse” is expected to also be No. 1 in its opening round in South Korea and in its sophomore session in Australia — in addition to its first-place standing overall.

Half a BILLION!!  Wow!  Who still wants to see Eclipse again?  *raises hand* ME!!

    Thanks Theresa!

Entertainment Weekly talked to Tish Monaghan the costume designer for The Twilght Saga: Eclipse

You can learn a lot about a character — and an actor — talking to a film’s costume designer. Here, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s Tish Monaghan reveals a few secrets from the wardrobe closets:• Robert Pattinson wanted to wear karate pants for the training sequence. “So we got him some karate pants, and it’s like the crotch hangs down to the knees, and I just thought, Ugh. Who’s gonna go for this? Because everything has to be approved by Summit,” Monaghan says. “We took them in a little bit, and they loved the karate pants. Who knew? I was so surprised.”

    • Even at the film’s premiere, people squealed when Taylor Lautner turned around in that black T-shirt. “It was almost embarrassing. I felt so bad for him,” Monaghan says, with a laugh. “They were screaming and going ‘Wooooo!’” As she’d done on New Moon, her M.O. was to put him in smaller size Gap or Banana Republic T-shirts to emphasize his biceps, tightening the tees around the arm holes and taking them in down the side. (Pattinson wore Gap T-shirts, exclusively, she adds. “They were what fit him best. They had the best colors. So that’s what he ended up wearing, even when Edward takes Bella up to the tent. It may strike people as odd, but he doesn’t feel temperature, so that’s why we only put him in a shirt, and Bella’s all bundled up, and Jacob, of course, is running around shirtless.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse took in $24.2 million on it’s second day of release on Thursday bringing the total for the two days to $92.8 million!

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” continued to seduce plenty of moviegoers Thursday as it took in an estimated $24.2 million, but it isn’t exerting quite as strong a gravitational pull as its predecessor “New Moon,” which took in $42.3 million on its second day of release in November.

At the crowded multiplex, Thursday also saw the debut of Paramount’s mythic fantasy “The Last Airbender” in 3,169 locations, including 1,606 3D playdates. The PG-rated tale directed by M. Night Shyamalan took in $16.4 million, including the $3 million it scored at midnight screenings as it aims for number two status in the weekend listings.

Summit’s vampire- and werewolf-filled romance has collected about $92.8 million during its first two days of release in 4,416 theaters in North America, which compares to “Moon’s” first two-day gross of nearly $115 million.

But the two films are following slightly different release patterns. “Moon” opened on a Friday and pulled in $142.8 million over its first, three-day weekend.

“Eclipse” dawned with 12 a.m. screenings on Wednesday, establishing a new Wednesday opening boxoffice record of $68.5 million, including its monster $30 million midnight screenings. By the end of this holiday weekend, “Eclipse” is expected to have collected more than $150 million in its first six days.

Additionally, Summit reported that the movie attracted an estimated $16.2 million on its first day of release Wednesday in 21 foreign markets, including Italy, Brazil and Russia.

I’m a little surprised it didn’t do better than New Moon on the second day, even if it was a Thursday.  Nonetheless, this is still wonderful news!  I’m sure it will hit $150 million at the end of the weekend!

Variety has reviewed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and has great things to say about David Slade’s directing work–

It goes without saying that the faithful will devour “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third movie in Stephenie Meyer’s immensely popular supernatural love-triangle saga, and also the one in which Bella must finally choose between her two beastly suitors. The pleasant surprise this time around is that the result finally feels more like the blockbuster this top-earning franchise deserves. Employing a bigger budget, better effects and an edgier director (“Hard Candy’s” David Slade), “Eclipse” focuses on what works — the stars — even as the series’ parent-friendly abstinence message begins to unravel. Summer release should reap Summit’s biggest yield yet.Taking a cue from the “Harry Potter” series, which maintains continuity on the writing and casting fronts while introducing a different feel with each change of director, the “Twilight” producers have embraced a variety of different visions behind the camera. Capitalizing on her indie sensibility and keenly observed teen insights, Catherine Hardwicke set the tone with the low-budget first film, with Chris Weitz expanding (and flattening) the world with his broader, daytime soap-opera style in “New Moon.” Now, the task falls to Slade, who clearly understands how to work with actors while also demonstrating a welcome competence in the action and melodrama departments.
