VanCity Allie has another awesome report of her account at yet another Vancouver Eclipse set! This time – the Newborns have arrived Forks! Including Xavier Samuel (aka Riley) and Jodelle Ferland (aka Bree).
Allie gives all the deets (along with fantastic pictures) -
I had a chance to see a new set being filmed for Eclipse… the scene where the newborns arrive in Forks. It’s a picturesque scene, with mountains and water framing the background of the shot, and a sparse unoccupied beach for the newborns to arrive on… then they disappear into the forest. The vampire newborns looked absolutely chilling, and their rugged military-like outfits along with steely, determined glares just added to the mood. Filmed early in the morning, this scene was designed to look as if it had been shot at night, possibly just after dusk or just before dawn.
Riley (Xavier Samuel) and Bree (Jodelle Ferland) were on set as well as a number of newborn vampires we have NEVER seen before.
I’m always amazed at what a huge production it is to film just a few seconds for these movies. Second Unit Director EJ Foerster was on set, calm but directive… doing dozens of different takes for only a couple scenes. An amazing number of people involved plus tons of equipment and hours of filming from so many different angles just to get a 5 second shot… wow. Check out all the equipment on the shore, including the scuba diving gear and the dinghys. You can also see some of the shorter fake trees they used in the foreground on the beach.

There are two distinct scenes… scenes where the female newborn is talking to a male newborn, and the main scene (which they spent most of the time shooting) where there are three newborns including Riley coming out of the water onto the shore. They don’t come out of the water in the books, but I think it is a nice dramatic addition.
The water here was quite cool in temperature, so I’m not surprised at all to see the actors with thin wetsuits on under their costumes. They were also given small weights under their clothing to help keep them weighed down under the water before the “take”. I have my PADI scuba diving license so I was really curious about how they were using the divers for the filming. The scuba divers served two purposes: One, to give their extra regulator to the actors so they could breathe underwater when necessary… and two, to help give the actors cues and guide them to certain checkpoints when necessary.
In this scene in the video (coming soon), you’ll see the Director ask them to go underwater (”Under water!), then he counts as they are rolling with the movie cameras “OK, Riley”… then the first actor emerges (my guess is they were using “Riley” as the code word, since the first actor that emerges is NOT Riley). Then the Director calls them out “2…. and 3″… and the other actor and then Riley emerges from the water. The vampires moved slowly, slinking through the water but very clearly with purpose.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Jodelle film any of her scenes (that’s not her in the water), but you can see her here grabbing some food. Her makeup was already done though, as you can see how pale she looks.

Also he can't have every scene look exactly like in the book, some things don't translate well on screen. I have no problem with added/changed scenes as long as the important ones are included and the main plot is unchanged.

The new born vampires have to look a little scary. It would ruin the whole emotion of the scene if you have model-like vampires trying to be scary. It just wouldn't portray the fear correctly. So far, I think DS is doing great by adding these scenes. I think it is a great idea for them to come out of the water because it will emphasize the fact that the wolves cannot go into the water like the vampires.
some people are just such book nazis,unbelievable. No movie was/is/ever will be exactly like the book, they need to accept this fact. The book and the movie are two different entities.
I'm excited that this movie looks like it's gonna be dark, ominous and edgy but with love story as the main plotline, not like teeny One Tree Hill with puurrty vampires.

it's the thing with franchises translated to screen: it has to be appriciated as a movie and a book adaptation. when you read the books already you won't ever be objective.
Plus come on guys they hired Slade BECAUSE of 30 days of Night. that means that the producers and studio liked and want his take at a vampire story.

I think they should be scary AND attractive. I mean, Edward even said he is the greatest predator because everything about him “invites” you in (smell, face, voice). Even the bad vamps in Twilight were attractive. Vamps are supposed to blend in if they wanted to. Bella's opinion of every vamps she encounters, good and bad as attractive. I'm sure in the movie they will look better, but based off of these pictures, I would definitely run away from someone who looked like that. There is nothing “inviting” about them. They do look zombie-ish. I hope that after editing and doing all the things they do to finalize a movie, that they convey SM's vision – Bella's vision – scary, fierce, beautiful.

I'm not sure if they are supposed to look hot. Remember that they haven't been civilized. They are messy, clumsy, and the Cullens were afraid their behavior would draw the Volturi (until they figured out it was Victoria's doing).

Actually what I don't understand is those whiny comments how they're supposed to be good looking etc.
Main and supporting vamp characters are attractive, that's good enough for me. The newborns are only there to be ripped into pieces by the Cullens/wolfpack, they won't be on camera for long, there will be like glimpses of them during the fight or in Seattle killing off humans, so who cares if they're not that attractive.

I can see all the sides. Vampires by definition are scary. I suppose while reading the books I just got it into my head that they were not only scary but beautiful too. Pictured above are like 4 newborns. There are 18 of them plus Riley, so this might not be completely representative of them as a whole. Though I guess it would be silly to see a bunch of super models coming at you … unless they can act convincingly menacing. Reagrdless, I'm excited we will see them and not just Bella's POV at the camp site.

6 minutes of New Moon completely surpassed Twilight including all the extra footage (well not the commentary…I love hearing Rob's voice under any context…even if it means watching Twilight). It better be because I already made plans to see it twice! LOL!

Yeah, I agree with everyone else. It'll be Taylor, Chris, and Kristen this time. There were scenes that Rob wasn't in in Twilight and he was just silent. I'm sure that'll be the case for Taylor. And it'd be so odd if Rob did the commentary and Taylor didn't or if all four did the commentary. It's all about Team Jacob this go-round anyway. Summit can't pass on this $$-making opportunity to continue to emphasize Taylor's hunky features.
They could have two versions of commentary OTOH. But for Eclipse, it HAS to be four of them, I think. They should be able to work something out so it's not an overwhelming experience.

See that is what some people refuse to see below the Twilight surface, yes it's a love story but involves a vampire and a mortal, which includes other vampires, vampires kill people and if you would look further in Eclipse the way the newborns kill their victims is not romantic at all, pretty savage if you ask me.
Same with Jasper's history with Maria and how he was rewarded, does make you wonder are they reading the same thing we are? You take away Stephenie's edits of the stories, they are pretty nasty.

we don't know that they didn't really…carlisle went into hiding by running away and trying to starve himself and finally figured out he could hunt animals and edward took off from carlisle for a while and killed “bad” people…but SM never really tells us much more on after edward was turned and how he acted…so i am guessing he was just like the new borns here but had carlisle to help him thru it and show him his way of survival on animals…just my opnion :>

Listen lady this will be the last time I will be addressing you, have you ever read Dracula by Bram Stoker? has there been a movie like the novel? how about Queen of the Damned? or even Lord of the Rings? that is why they call it an adaption sweetie. Some things that go well on paper don't always go well on screen, like for example in New Moon, I like how Laurent fights the wolves instead of running. And I do like that the vampires are made scary, in fact Stephenie describes them as being savage like, so I doubt they had time to stop by the beauty salon.
So again no one is asking you don't watch the movies, stick to the books than.

I'm not saying they need to look like Aro… they should have some beauty with the craving look. In the photos, they look like Zombies… not Steph's Vampires… Think about Bree, it was in her face.. Steph said she was beautiful, but for the tortured look on her face. She was clawing the ground, yes. But that didn't mean that they had to look dead…. like they look in the photos…
There is a happy medium. Granted, Hollywood does not interpret books very well, but this looks more of David Slades' 30 days interpretation of vamps and not Steph's descriptions from her books.

What I am saying is this: She did not describe them as looking from “Night of the Living Dead”.
These characters look like they are dead. They have no facial expression, which is opposite of what Stephenie said. They are unattractive physically, which is opposite of what Stephenie said.
I don't mind the “dark and scary”. Eclipse had its dark moments, that is not in question.
What I question is the direction of a director who has repeatedly dissed on the books and previous movie that he is now directing the sequel to.
I don't hate the man. I never met the man. I just think if you do a movie of a book, have some book integrity.
