but at the same time the guilty pleasure kicks in where I'm like “oooh he's overprotective and he loves her and he doesn't want anything to hurt her! No really he doesn't i swear!”

Team Swiss seems like a good team to be on. For me, though, I go with which character annoys me the least. Jacob annoyed me with the force-kissing Bella (twice) thing and in general I think he's sort of whiny about Bella wanting to be w/ Edward. So when I weigh the pros and cons of each, I like Edward more

Yea, well I think the most important thing is being able to at least see those aspects of it and look at them critically, rather than deny that there's anything problematic in the series at all (as some other fans have done). You can like something, but at least admit that it's got some stuff in it that is squicky
