Eclipse Chapter 20 Let’s Re Read Eclipse Together! Chapter 20 eclipse re read

Welcome to the ‘Eclipse’ Community Re-Read! Join us by reading a chapter every Monday & Friday.  I’ll post a thread for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on June 30th. So, dig out your old or new copy of Eclipse, read the chapter and then come back here, and discuss anything you find of interest that you might have missed the first time around. Only 25 more days to go!

 Chapter 20: Compromise

There were some things that had changed. For instance, I was ready. I was ready to join his family and his world. The fear and guilt and anguish I was feeling now had taught me that much. I’d had a chance to concentrate on this. The next time something came at us, I would be ready. An asset, not a liability. He would never have to make the choice between me and his family again. We would be partners, like Alice and Jasper. Next time, I would do my part.

In the beginning of this chapter Bella plays Mother Goose and ensures that all of her pals from Forks High are away at the concert that she had planned for herself, Edward, and Alice. Charlie had plans to go open sea fishing with Billy Black. Bella has done all she can to get her loved ones safe from the newborn army that is invading the town of Forks.

  •  Pg. 436 Time to put the kiddies to bed because it gets a bit steamy in here! Edward and Bella are spending which seems to be their first night completely alone. The pair arrives at the Cullen home; Edward has quite the surprise for Bella. His lips found mine as I heard him kick the truck’s door shut behind me. Without breaking the kiss, he swung me up so that I was cradled in his arms and carried me into the house. He continued to kiss me for several minutes, standing there in the entry; he seemed less guarded than usual, his mouth cold and urgent on mine. “Welcome home,” he said, his eyes liquid and warm. “That sounds nice,” I said, breathless. “I have something for you. Your hand-me-down, remember? You said that was allowable.” “Oh, that’s right. I guess I did say that.”
  • Pg. 438 Edward pulls out some major bling for Bella. I examined it cautiously. On the opposite side of the chain from the wolf, there now hung a brilliant heart-shaped crystal. It was cut in a million facets, so that even in the subdued light shining from the lamp, it sparkled. I inhaled in a low gasp. “It was my mother’s. I inherited quite a few baubles like this. (Shout out to 5ct bauble!) I’ve given some to Esme and Alice both. (What? No Rosalie?) So, clearly, this is not a big deal in any way. But I thought it was a good representation. It’s hard and cold. And it throws rainbows in the sunlight.” “You forgot the most important similarity. It’s beautiful.” “My heart is just as silent, and it, too, is yours.”Aww these two are soo cute!
  • Pg. 443 Bella has tried to sway Edward in every way possible to get her way. The two spoke of college, marriage, and Bella putting off immortality for a while, but Bella has one thing on her mind.  My hands were slightly shaky as I unlocked my arms from around his neck. My fingers slid down his neck to the collar of his shirt. The trembling didn’t help as I tried to hurry to undo the buttons before he stopped me. His lips froze, and I could almost hear the click in his head as he put together my words and my actions. “Be reasonable, Bella.” “You promised-whatever I wanted.” “We’re not having this discussion.” He glared at me while he refastened the two buttons I’d managed to open. My teeth clamped together. “I say we are,” I growled.Growled? Like really? Umm, okay. I moved my hands to my blouse and yanked open the top button.Whoa! Alrighty hotness. Is Bella trying to flash Eddie some cleavage? He grabbed my wrists and pinned them to my sides. “I say we’re not,” he said flatly. We glowered at each other. This has to be in the movie! While I was ranting, he pulled my hands together to restrain them in just one of his, and put his other hand over my mouth. “No.” His face was hard. Sidebar-Remember back to the Twilightdays, when ole Ed used to be soo afraid to touch Bella, to kiss Bella etc. Now, young Cullen is grabbing wrists, putting hands over a human mouth…he’s evolved!
  • Pg.448 Bella has stooped to attempting to seduce a vampire! But this Edward Cullen has some amazing self control. Edward has even resorted to breaking a piece of the iron bed off effortlessly in his hand to show Bella, just how breakable she is, in his out of control hands. “Please,” I finally whispered, hopeless. “It’s all I want. Please. You don’t have to make me any guarantees. If it doesn’t work out right, well, then that’s that. Just let us try…only try. And I’ll give you what you want. I’ll marry you. I’ll let you pay for Dartmouth, and I won’t complain about the bribe to get me in. You can even buy me a fast car if that makes you happy! Just…please.” His icy arms tightened around me, and his lips were at my ear; his cool breath made me shiver. “This is unbearable. So many things I’ve wanted to give you-and this is what you decide to demand. Do you have any idea how painful it is, trying to refuse you when you plead with me this way?” “Then don’t refuse,” I suggested breathlessly. His mouth was not gentile; there was a brand-new edge of conflict and desperation in the way his lips moved. He didn’t stop kissing me. I was the one who had to break away, gasping for air. Even then his lips did not leave my skin, they just moved to my throat. I got through with the buttons on his shirt this time easily, and my fingers traced the perfect planes of his icy chest. He was too beautiful. I pilled his mouth back to mine, and he seemed just as eager as I was. One of his hands still cupped my face; his other arm was tight around my waist, straining me closer to him. Sidebar-who here thinks this is too steamy for daytime reading? *raises hand*lol
  • Pg. 450 We’re engaged to Edward freakin’ Cullen! After Edward puts a sudden halt on all things sexual, Bella makes a last ditch effort to get her way, but Edward is firmer than ever. “I wasn’t born yesterday.” He chuckled in my ear. “Out of the two of us, which do you think is more unwilling to give the other what they want? You just promised to marry me before you do any changing, but if I give in tonight, what guarantee do I have that you won’t go running off to Carlisle in the morning?” I exhaled with a loud huff. “I have to marry you first?” I asked in disbelief. “That’s the deal-take it or leave it. Compromise, remember?” His arms wrapped around me, and he began kissing me in a way that should be illegal. ”I think that’s a really bad idea,” I gasped when he let me breathe. “How did this happen? I thought I was holding my own tonight-for once- and now, all of a sudden-“ “You’re engaged,” he finished.
  • Pg. 456 Bella and Edward continue their arguments about protecting their virtues and matrimony. It all boils down to Edward and he is old fashioned and a gentleman and I think this makes him super attractive. I don’t blame Bella for wanting to jump his cold bones. “I suppose you don’t want your ring now?” “You suppose correctly.” He laughed at my expression. “That’s fine. I’ll get it on your finger soon enough.” I glared at him. “You talk like you already have one.” “I do. Ready to force it upon you at the first sign of weakness.” “You’re unbelievable.” “Do you want to see it?” he asked. “No!” I almost shouted, a reflex reaction. I regretted it at once. “That’s all right,” he shrugged. “It can wait.” I sighed. “Show me the damn ring, Edward.” Blatant disrespect! He should give her a ring out of the Cracker Jack box! He shook his head. “No.” “Please?” I asked quietly, experimenting with my newly discovered weapon. I touched his face lightly with the tips of my fingers. Please can I see it?”  Gosh this Bella is exactly like me when we want to get our way…darn Virgo’s! His eyes narrowed. “You are the most dangerous creature I’ve ever met,” he muttered. Edward is back in a flash with the ring. “Go ahead and look, then,” he said brusquely. The surface was smooth with black satin. I brushed my fingers over it, hesitatingly. “You didn’t spend a lot of money, did you? Lie to me, if you did.”  Someone should really tell Bella, that it’s tacky to talk about money, all the time smh.  “I didn’t spend anything. It’s another hand-me down. This is the ring my father gave to my mother.” Aww! “Oh.” Surprise colored my voice.
  • Pg. 458 Edward presents Bella, with the ring that belonged to his birth mother. “I suppose it’s a little outdated. Old-fashioned, just like me. I can get you something more modern. Something from Tiffany’s?” Hale yea! I’ll take 2! Nestled into the black satin, Elizabeth Masen’s ring sparkled in the dim light. The face was a long oval, set with slanting rows of glittering round stones. The band was gold-delicate and narrow. The gold made a fragile web around the diamonds. I’d never seen anything like it. “It’s so pretty.” “Do you like it?” “It’s beautiful.” I shrugged, feigning a lack of interest. “What’s not to like?” He chuckled. “See if it fits.” My left hand clenched into a fist. “Bella,” he sighed. “I’m not going to solder it to your finger. Just try it on so I can see if it needs to be sized. Then you can take it right off.” “Fine,” I grumbled. He took my left hand in his, and slid the ring into place on my third finger. “A perfect fit. That’s nice-saves me a trip to the jeweler’s”
  • Pg. 459-460 “You like that, don’t you?” “Sure,” he said, still casual. “It looks every nice on you.”   This is such a special, sacred moment for Edward and he has Debbie Downer to share it with. Edward is positively enthralled with his bride-to-be, that he is beaming!  He gazed back, and the casual pretense suddenly slipped away. He was glowing-his angel’s face brilliant with joy and victory. He was so glorious that it knocked me breathless. Before I could catch my breath, he was kissing me, his lips exultant. I was lightheaded when he moved his mouth to whisper in my ear-but his breathing was just as ragged as mine. “Yes, I like it. You have no idea.” I laughed, gasping a little. “I believe you.” “Do you mind if I do something?” he murmured, his arms tightening around me. “Anything you want,” But he let me go and slid away. “Anything but that,” I complained. He ignored me, taking my hand and pulling me off the bed, too. He stood in front of me, hands on my shoulders, face serious. “Now, I want to do this right. Please, please, keep in mind that you’ve already agreed to this, and don’t ruin it for me.” “Oh, no,” I gasped as he slid down onto one knee. “Isabella Swan?” He looked up at me through his impossibly long lashes, his golden eyes soft but, somehow still scorching. “I promise to love you forever-every single day of forever. Will you marry me?”  There were many things I wanted to say, some of them not nice at all, and others more disgustingly gooey and romantic then he probably dreamed I was capable of. Rather than embarrass myself with either, I whispered, “Yes.” “Thank you,” he said simply. He took my left hand and kissed each of my fingertips before he kissed the ring that was now mine.

I’ve got the tears rolling down my face. This is just too sweet for words! When in the heck is June 30th gonna get here!

Hi teamedwardsince77and happy 4th,great post, yes I loved the proposal scene in the movie too.I thought Kristen and Rob did a great job bring Bella and Edward to life,I only wish it could have had that whole chapter in there.

  • Anonymous

Yes the original was great, but there was also one with William Hurt that one was very good too.

  • twiheart

Your English is impeccable, DA (not sure my spelling is, though, lol).   I never knew you were not American until we started mentioning where we were from.  Our mother tongue may be English, but Spanish is fast becoming pretty dominant as our Hispanic population grows.  I’ve tried to learn Spanish, but wasn’t that dedicated, I guess.  Without constant use, you forget anything you learn.

Funny you should say how beautiful English is.  I guess when it is your native tongue, it doesn’t sound as lovely and romantic as, say French or Spanish, or other foreign tongues.

It’s my all time fav chapter too,i know what you mean I could stay in this chapter too. Edward and Bella were just to cute here, how I loved Edward telling Bella, why not tonight and her response, I also loved the movie version too,Rob did such a great job with the proposal looking all nervous, it just melt your heart.

Hi Laureleaf, happy 4th, yes this is the best chapter for me,since its only Bella and Edward totally alone for once. I especially liked the part, I stared into his eyes, trying to decipher the emotion that smolder just under the surface. He gazed back, and the casual pretense suddenly slipped away. He was glowing–his angel’s face brillant with joy and victory. He was so glorious that it knocked me breathless. It knocked me breathless too.

Hi DA, I’ve heard VA is a good series maybe I’ll give it a try. Hope you had a nice weekend.

  • Anonymous

Edwards POV here would be the best,if only, but we can’t even get MS finished. Edward is every females dream guy, who wouldn’t  want him, I can’t imagine it. I  agree that this chapter is so beautifully written, and full of emotion of two people in love, who want the same thing to be together forever, but each having  a different view of how to achive that.

  • twiheart

Hi DA,  If you love these books, then I know I would also, as I, too, love fantasy and romance.    Have you ever read any of the “Outlander” series by Diana Gabaldon? I think there are 7 books. I just got the audio book #5 from the library. 56 hours of CD listening in 22 days, so I’m “hooked up” to a CD player and ear phones most of my day (fitting in Eclipse chapters when I can).

This is a series of books that combine historical romance with time travel.  The first book “Outlander” starts when a British WWII nurse is having a 2nd honeymoon with her husband of 7 years in the Scottish Highlands. Being separated most of the war years, they were hoping to re-establish their relationship.  As Claire was gathering rare flowers for her collection on a Highland craig by herself, she ventures near some standing stones (like Stonehenge) and inadvertantly is pulled through the stones and finds herself  right in the middle of a skirmish between a group of Brits and Scots in about 1765.  It becomes a love story as Claire meets this glorious young Highlander, Jaime Frazer, and they are forced to marry to save their lives, and they fall in love.  She is really conflicted, as she is already married….to a man who won’t be born for another 200 years.   The books are about their lives together during the turbulent times of early history, both in Europe with the Scottish rising against the British, French revolution and later the American Revolution. Diana Gabaldon researches her material very well and is an excellent story teller and you become part of the books and fall in love with Jaime, so rough, wild, and very tender and extremely in love with Claire.   They are adult books. Not graphic nasty, just very detailed and matter of fact.  Not Twilight, but good reading.

My Bedtime, but who can sleep with all the booming and popping and hoping our roof doesn’t catch on fire.    Was going say hope you had a nice holiday, but since July 4th is a very American holiday, I’ll just say hope you had a nice, quiet weekend.

Hi EdwardNana, hope you had a great 4th, Bella was a little difficult, but who could blame her, she got all hot and bothered, and Edward just wouldn’t cooperate with Bellas plan, what a let down, just when she thought she would have Edward all to herself. That would put any girl into a rotten mood.

  • Anonymous

Hi EdwardsNana I see you found us,I had a nice 4th,thanks. I read above you didn’t really like the 4th,it can be injury prone time. Hope your 4th was good.

  • Anonymous

I wish Bella would have said them too. I think Edward would have loved it.

Twiheart is right, twigrandma, you need to put Jane Eyre on your reading list.  It is at the top of Stephenie’s list of her inspiritations for Twilight.  Check out this link:

I actually think that Edward is more like Rochester than Mr. Darcy.  My favorite film version is an old BBC mini series with Michael Jayston and Sorcha Cusak.  The production quality isn’t great, but the screenplay and the acting is really good.  The movie that came out this year wasn’t bad; in fact it was the best 2 hour version I’ve seen.

  • Anonymous

I agree, TeamEdward_Bella4ever, the proposal scene could have been longer, and we should have had the leg hitch scene, too.  We all want the Twilight miniseries — one of those long ones that go on for years! LOL!

  • Anonymous

Hi twiheart, the part of the scene where Bella was coming up the steps really didn’t work.  I think they were trying to show that she came to the Cullen house with a plan but was feeling embarrassed and unsure of herself; unfortunately they shortened the time she was lingering around outside so that it looked like she just walked up the steps and Edward opened the door and asked her what she was doing outside.  Kristen mentions in the commentary that it really doesn’t make sense.

  • LaurelLeaf

Hey, girlfriend, hope your 4th was great.  Yes, this chapter is wonderful because it’s all B & E romance.  I was knocked breathless, too!

  • LaurelLeaf

Hi, DancingAlice, wow, a sister Polish girl!  Pierogi’s anytime!  My great-grandparents came from Poland and when I was a little girl, visiting my grandparents always involved Polish music being played (grin).  It’s fun.  I can’t read it, and only know some phrases but I recognize it anywhere.  One of my uncles was Russian, too, and he would throw out some Russian words in conversations, too.

Yes, Twiheart, Vampire Academy has lots of romance but also has wonderful characters.  Another adult woman told me about it, and I was swept away.  I still love Edward but Dimitri and poor Adrian are hot guys!  Er, not in the werewolf way :) .  I would suggest these books to our fellow Twi-sisters who need something new to read.

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Hi LaurelLeaf, when I was young, I used to listen to a Polish band called Budka Suflera and a Polish musician Czieslaw Niemen – they were great. Paul Wesley (Stefan in VD) ´s parents also come from Poland and he can speak Polish. In one of his interviews he said he used to visit his grandfather in Poland as a young boy. Which Vampire Academy book are you reading at the moment? I´ve read all the six ones – I love them.

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Hi TE_B4E, I had a nice weekend, thanks. How was your 4th July?
I love VA – I can recommend it.

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Thanks Twiheart, but I know I make mistakes. We make mistakes even in our mother tongues. You are right that to know a language it means you have to learn it or use it all your life otherwise you forget it, you can even forget your mother tongue if you don´t use it for many years.I also like Spanish and would like to speak it but there are no Spanish teachers where I live. I agree with you that it is hard to say if the language you use from your childhood is beautiful or not and different people like different languages. In Europe most of the people prefer learning English but there are some who prefer German. English is music to my ears and I like to read what you write because I like your choice of words. I don´t know Diana Gabaldon but I will look into it, Outlander sounds interesting. Have a nice evening, I hope your husband is feeling better, you haven´t caught anything and your roof and the forests roun you survived the celebration. Hugs

Thanks for the info, TES77! I always like to read the book before I see the movie. :)

Yes, I think it’s the one for the calendar.

  • Anonymous

Yes, Jacob definitely needs to be in the background.

  • EdwardsNana

It’s true TeamEdward_Bella4ever, Edward and his morals…….gotta love him.

  • EdwardsNana

Hi TeamEdward_Bella4ever, my fouth of July was good.  My husband left for AZ to be with his mom.  I had the whole place to myself.  So I watched “Twilight”, “New Moon” and “Eclipse” and made some kettle corn…………..so basically I spent the day with Edward.  It just doesn’t get any better……..hugs!!!

  • EdwardsNana

Hi DancingAlice, hope you listened and enjoyed the commentary text.

  • Anonymous

Sounds good to me, but it would have to be the same cast and I don’t think their up for that,so sad. :-)

  • Anonymous

No it isn’t a practical solution.  So true and so sad.  If it wasn’t the same cast, what would be the point?

  • LaurelLeaf

Hi, DancingAlice.  I didn’t know Paul Wesley (Stefan) was Polish.  Interesting. I just bought and started reading “Last Sacrifice” (the final book in the series).  Although it would be neat to see this on TV, they would probably mangle the storyline like they have in Vampire Diaries so they could keep the story going several seasons.  I would much prefer a movie rendition but there again, would producers keep the story faithful?  I have been swept away by Rosemarie Hathaway and her friends.  I laughed so much when I read her father’s comment in the beginning of book 6 about how proud he was of her–just 18 and all the crazy things she’s done!  Abe is amazing.

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Hi, LaurelLeaf, Paul´s real name is Paul Thomas Wasilewski. He was criticised that in VD he imitates Edward, but I don´t think it´s true because in 2006 he starred in a mini-series Fallen about fallen angels and he looks and plays the same there as in VD.
I read all the 6 VA books and they are great. RM explains the basic things in all of them so it is possible to start reading it at any of them but you are missing a lot of great stuff.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it wouldn’t be the same without them, but maybe for the next generation they could do it,they’ll probably remake it again anyway, but the original will always be the best.

  • Anonymous

Glad to hear that you got to spend some quality time with Edward while your hubby was away. I can’t think of anything much better than spending it with Edward.:-)

  • Anonymous

Hi LaurelLeaf,my 4th was good, spent it with my sister and our friend and her hubby at their lake house,it was fun, but with all that fun,I came back alittle tired. But thats life.:-)

  • Anonymous

Did you see the new Jane Erye at the theater? I wanted to see it, but it didn’t come to my area, maybe when it comes out on video.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I did get to see it at the theater, and I am so glad because the cinematography was beautiful!!  We had to go down to Hollywood to see it though.  It never came to the suburban theaters.  I wonder when it will come out on DVD.

  • LaurelLeaf

Being at the lake house sounds nice.  We relaxed here.  It was kind of hot so just took it easy.  It was nice.  And I was reading “Spirit Bound” of the Vampire Academy novels.  I’ve been staying up way too late reading!  I think you would like them, TeamE_B4ever.  Fast paced, romantic and wonderful characters.  Let us know what you think if you do decide to start reading them.  I love our Cullens first but the Vampire Academy world is enjoyable, too.  I was thrilled to learn that the author is starting a new spin off with some of the other characters–now we need to hear that SM is doing the same!

  • LaurelLeaf

Oh, I have read the first five books, DancingAlice and am 100 pages into the last one.  You’re right, in each book, RM recaps enough so a reader knows what’s going on but it’s best to start from the begining.  I read on her website that she is starting a new spin off series “Bloodlines” with the characters Sydney, Jill, Eddie & Adrian.  That sounds good, too!

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Sorry LaurelLeaf, I misunderstood. I´ve also read about the Bloodlines and I´m looking forward to it.

  • Anonymous

I’m still hoping for MS and maybe one day the series from Edwards POV, or more Edward and Bella. That would be the very best.

  • Anonymous

I’m suprised it didn’t come to the smaller theaters,it came to my area and it’s small.

  • Anonymous

Well, hello even though you all probable won’t see this, but I was on the road and almost into Ca. at this point… finally reading everyones posts-comments…. I love this chapter also as I do many of these recent ones.  and I also agree with everyones comments. The movie version was done well but no matter what it will never be the way we red it, and love it.   :) )
