Eclipse Chapter 22 Let’s Re Read Eclipse Together! Chapter 22 eclipse re read

Welcome to the ‘Eclipse’ Community Re-Read! Join us by reading a chapter every Monday & Friday.  I’ll post a thread for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on June 30th. So, dig out your old or new copy of Eclipse, read the chapter and then come back here, and discuss anything you find of interest that you might have missed the first time around.

 Chapter 22: Fire and Ice

My mind wandered as I waited for sleep to find me. This warm little space made me think of the early days with Jacob, and I remembered how it used to be when he was my replacement sun, the warmth that made my empty life livable. It had been a while since I’d thought of Jake that way, but here he was, warming me again.

Here it is one of the most anticipated scenes of the book! The tent scene! Let’s get right to it. Shout out to TeamSpaceHeaters!

  • Pg.488  It’s now 2A.M. and Bella is shivering her behind off. Edward is in the tent with her far away in the corner afraid to even be inside of the tent with her because he makes it that much colder. “What can I do?” he almost begged. I just shook my head. Out in the snow, Jacob whined unhappily. “G-g-g-get out of h-h-h-ere.” I ordered, again.  “He’s worried about you,” Edward translated. “He’s fine. His body is equipped to deal with this.” Jacob whimpered, a high-pitched, grating sound of complaint. “What do you want me to do? Edward growled, too anxious to bother with politeness anymore. “Carry her through that? I don’t see you making yourself useful. Why don’t you go fetch a space heater or something?”   Eclipse icon smile Let’s Re Read Eclipse Together! Chapter 22 eclipse re read   A sudden howl ripped through the roar of the wind, and I covered my ears against the noise. Edward scowled. “That was hardly necessary. And that’s the worse idea I’ve ever heard,” he called more loudly. “Better than anything you’ve come up with,” Jacob answered, his human voice startling me. “Go fetch a space heater,” he grumbled. “I’m not a St. Bernard.”  Jacob has now joined Edward and Bella inside of the tent lol.  “I don’t like this,” Edward hissed as Jake zipped the tent door shut. “Just give her the coat and get out.” “The parka’s for tomorrow-she’s too cold to warm it up by herself. It’s frozen. You said she needed a space heater, and here I am.” Jacob held his arms wide as the tent allowed. As usual, when he’d been running around as a wolf, he’d only thrown on the bare essentials-just a pair of sweats, no shirt, no shoes. “J-J-J-J-Jake, you’ll f-f-f-freez-z-z-ze,” I tried to complain. “Not me,” he said cheerfully. “I run at a toast one-oh-eight point nine these days. I’ll have you sweating in no time.” Edward snarled, but Jacob didn’t even look at him. Instead, he crawled to my side and started unzipping my sleeping bag. Edward’s hand was suddenly hard on his shoulder, restraining, snow white against the dark skin. Jacob’s jaw clenched, his nostrils flaring, his body recoiling from the cold touch. “Get your hand off of me,” he growled through his teeth. “Keep your hands off of her,” Edward answered blackly. “D-d-d-don’t f-f-f-f-fight,” I pleaded. “I’m sure she’ll thank you for this when her toes turn black and drop off,” Jacob snapped. His voice was flat and frightening. “Watch yourself.”
  • Pg. 491 “Scoot over, Bella,” he said, zipping the sleeping bag open farther. “N-n-n-n-n,” I tried to protest. “Don’t be stupid,” he said, exasperated. “Don’t you like having ten toes?” He crammed his body into the nonexistent space, forcing the zipper up behind himself. And then I couldn’t object-I didn’t want to anymore. He was so warm. His arms constricted around me, holding me snugly against his bare chest, The heat was irresistible, like air after being underwater for too long. He cringed when I pressed my icy fingers eagerly against his skin. “Try to relax,” he suggested as another shiver rippled through me violently. “You’ll be warm in a minute. Of course, you’d warm up faster if you took your clothes off.” Edward growled sharply. “That’s just a simple fact,” Jacob defended himself. “Survival one-oh-one.”  “C-c-cut it out, Jake.” “Don’t worry about the bloodsucker. He’s just jealous.” Of course I am.” Edward’s voice was velvet again, under control, a musical murmur in the darkness. “You don’t have the faintest idea how much I wish I could do what you’re doing for her, mongrel.” “Those are the breaks,” Jacob said lightly, but then his tone soured. “At least you know she wishes it was you.” “True,” Edward agreed.   As Bella begins to thaw out, Jacob makes a suggestion about her blue lips and offers to warm them up for her as well. Lol.  So who here would do exactly what Bella has done? As anemic as I am, I’m constantly running cold and once I get cold, it takes forever to warm me back up. Sorry Edward, I would have to snuggle up to Jacob for the night. Eclipse icon sad Let’s Re Read Eclipse Together! Chapter 22 eclipse re read
  • Pg.  494-497 Bella finally drifts off to sleep. The bickering between both guys continues. Edward demands that Jacob shut up. Jacob in turn tells Edward to get out of his head, lol. Jake decides to talk to Edward in depth about his future with Bella and their jealousy factor. “Does that bother you? Do you wish you could see what she’s thinking, too?” “Yes…and no, again. She likes it better this way, and, though it sometimes drives me insane, I’d rather she was happy.” The wind ripped around the tent, shaking it like an earthquake. Jacob’s arms tightened around me protectively. “Thank you,” Edward whispered. “Odd as this might sound, I suppose I’m glad you’re here, Jacob.” “You mean, ‘as much as I’d love to kill you, I’m glad she’s warm,’ right?” “It’s an uncomfortable choice truce, isn’t it?”  Jacob’s whisper was suddenly smug. “I knew you were just as crazy jealous as I am.” “I’m not such a fool as to wear it on my sleeve like you do. It doesn’t help your case, you know.” “You have more patience than I do.” “I should. I’ve had a hundred years to gain it. A hundred years of waiting for her.”
  • Pg. 500! Woo hoo! Jacob talks to Edward about when he left Bella, and Edward talks about 4 different alternatives for Bella’s life. “I like option one,” Jacob muttered. Edward didn’t respond. “You know exactly how much I hate to accept this,” Jacob whispered slowly, “But I can see that you do love her…in your way. I can’t argue with that anymore.”  ‘In your way?” Jacob please! Edward loves Bella in EVERY WAY. “Given that, I don’t think you should give up on the first alternative, not yet. I think there’s a very good chance that she would be okay. After time. You know, if she hadn’t jumped off that cliff in March…and if you’d waited another six months to check on her…Well, you might have found her reasonably happy. I had a game plan.”  Cute.
  • Pg. 502 Jacob explains that he would be a better fit for Bella. Us vampire lovers deep down inside realize from a family stand point this is extremely true. Bella could be with Jacob and have a somewhat normal life, watch her parents grow old, and have babies, but werewolf babies? Again somewhat normal. “Can you consider the idea that I might be better for her than you are?” “I have considered it,” Edward answered quietly. “In some ways, you would be better suited for her than another human. Bella takes some looking after, and you’re strong enough that you could protect her from herself, and from everything that conspires against her. You have done that already, and I’ll owe you for that as long as I live-forever-whichever comes first…I even asked Alice if she could see that-see if Bella would be better off with you. She couldn’t, of course. She can’t see you, and then Bella’s sure of her course, for now. But I’m not stupid enough to make the same mistake I made before Jacob. As long as she wants me, I’m here.” “And if she were to decide that she wanted me?” Jacob challenged. “Okay, it’s a long shot, I’ll give you that.”  “I would let her go.” “Just like that?”  And my lovelies this is where my Edward Cullen pulls his trump card. “But I would keep watch. You see Jacob, you might leave her someday. Like Sam and Emily, you wouldn’t have a choice. I would always be waiting in the wings, hoping for that to happen.” Jacob snorted quietly. “Well, you’ve been much more honest than I had any right to expect…Edward. Thanks for letting me in your head.”

No matter the teams we represent, Edward is right. The reality of the situation is yes Jacob loves Bella, for now. I’m not exactly convinced of this, only because he is immature and wishy washy. Also the fact that he has had numerous times to imprint on Bella and it has not yet happened. Even if Edward was never in the picture, say for instance if Bella was dating Mike Newton. Jacob could try and try but if he can’t imprint on Bella, then she isn’t meant for him. This is an undeniable fact.

Hi DA, thanks I hope it all goes well to,I’m ready for a change.

There just jealous they don’t have his hair and that so many people love him and that he’s a good person, so that make things up.

  • Anonymous

My interview is this month so I’ll know soon. When I know for sure I will let you know.

They should have used a wig,or not cut his hair so short, it was suppose to be a unfinihed hair cut not almost shaved off on one side.

  • EdwardsNana

Hi TeamEdward_Bella4ever, you sure have that right.  Robert is really a good guy.  He has so much more class than most.

  • TeamEC1918

Good luck TEB4e. I hope it all works out. I think I will be in CT forever :( although the idea of moving somewhere more exciting n warmer sounds amazing, I don’t think I can move far from my family. My parents live in the Dominican Republic but they visit at least twice a yr a few months at a time. But my siblings are all close the furthest maybe 1 1/2 hrs away with the exception of one brother who lives in Miami. And my husbands family all live in our city and he is extremely close to them. But I always dream of moving to FL

  • LaurelLeaf

Hey, there, Twiheart.  I feel relieved to hear you explain that our Bella’s reluctance might be more to cynicism about marriage and her fear of vulnerability.  I keep forgetting that  Renee + marriage = disaster/negativity etc. and it influenced young Bella.

I have thought a lot that Bella might be afraid to believe Edward sincerely wanting to call her ‘wife’.  Remember back in NM, and Alice says something about tieing up loose ends?  Maybe there is a lingering fear that, once Vicky & Co. are defeated, Edward and the Cullens will just disappear?  Although we may complain about Bella in these chapters,  the poor girl is stressed out, and hasn’t really completely healed from Edward & the Cullen’s decamping Forks after her birthday.  Who among us would want to be left standing at the alter if E-man suddenly decided (a unilateral, idiotic decision!) to take off for her own good?  Or because he felt Bella was sticking to him out of obligation when he thinks she might love Jacob more?  You know our Eddie; he comes up with all sorts of convoluted ideas!

Bella has always been on something of a rollercoaster due to Edwards yes/no behavior…ever since Twilight.  Yes, I love you.  No, I am no good for you.  Back and forth.  Ugh, jeesh make a decision Edward and stick to it!  Gosh, Bella is the same way, but golly gee, (can you believe I said that?) how can a girl be calm and steady if your significant other is up & down?

  • LaurelLeaf

How sad indeed.  14?  I was such an innocent at 14!  This is how it is now and it’s really sad.

  • http://newmoonmovie.org DancingAlice

Poor girl, she has complicated her life immensely, she is too immature to enjoy the motherhood and to grasp its essence.

Hi all, happy Sunday!  I so love this scene both in the book and in the movie.  Since you all have done a pretty good job of discussing the book scene, I thought that I’d talk about the movie scene a bit.  I was hoping that
this scene would be great in the movie, and it was.  Poor Edward cannot save
Bella from the cold!  Even if he picks
her up to run with her to somewhere warm, she will freeze.  He is totally powerless in the face of this
danger.  I think Rob does a pretty good
job of looking tortured.  Enter cocky
Jacob, whose idea of how to save Bella is quite upsetting to Edward, but seems
to be the only way to save her from the cold.
I like the stand-off between the two guys.  Edward is pretty much like any
guy would be: “No way are you going to snuggle with my girlfriend,”
but it dissolves when Jake reminds Edward of Bella’s welfare.  The line “I’m hotter than you” is a
hoot. I think the storm is pretty believable, and Kristen really looks
cold.  I understand that she was actually sick as a dog (no pun intended) when they shot this scene.  When Bella snuggles up to Jake it
is so sweet, but the really sweet part is how loving Jake looks.  He is so happy to be able to hold her – poor
guy is so in love. I love their conversation; both guys are snarky but also
earnest.  They both love her and are
actually able to convince the other of that concern!  I sort of miss the line that discusses when
their truce will end, at first light or after the battle.  They agree first
light, and we know how heated things get after first light.

Hi, teamedwardsince77, happy Sun. to you too. I loved the tent scene in the movie also, I thought they did a good job with it and it was pretty close to the book I.

  • Anonymous

Thanks TEC1918, I hope it all works out to, all my family lives in the south, so it would be a big change to move, but I’m looking forward to it.

  • Anonymous

DA, you are so right about that. She is still very much a child herself.

  • twiheart

Very good analysis, LaurelLeaf, and if I went through all the near-death experiences and up and downs with Edward, I’d be screaming all the way to the funny farm.  All in all, I think our Bells has “true grit”.   (I like your gosh and golly gee…..brings me back to my young years :-)

  • twiheart

“Sleep well, Jacob,” Edward murmured.  “Enjoy the moment.”   (Boy, what a guy…a heart as big as Texas even if it isn’t beating.)
Edward groaned softly.  “I didn’t mean that quite so literally.”
”Sorry,” Jacob whispered. “You could leave, you know–give us a little privacy.”   (Ha! In your dreams, puppy).
”Would you like me to HELP you sleep, Jacob?” Edward offered.
“You could try,” Jacob said, unconcerned.  “It would be interesting to see who walked away, wouldn’t it?”  (Cocky Jacob, playing on Edward’s control, knowing Edward would do nothing to hurt Bella.).
”Don’t tempt me too far, wolf.  My patience isn’t THAT perfect.”  (he has the patience of a saint).
(Jacob continues to taunt Edward..) Jacob whispered a laugh.  “I’d rather not move just now, if you don’t mind.”
Part of Edward is thankful that Jacob is there to prevent Bella from freezing to death, but a guy can only take so much.   I was pleased that they had come to a more friendly acceptance of each other by this point (or I think Jacob might have lost a couple arms).  Edward can read thoughts in Jacob’s mind that irritate the heck out of him, but he knows nothing bad will come of this to Bella.    However, it wasn’t easy for him, and he sought release in humming, louder than usual, Bella’s lullaby.

I loved both the movie and book versions of the tent scene and was so glad they did include pretty much of it in the movie.

The inn where twilight prom was filmed had a fire :(

  • Anonymous

That is sad! But the inn is preserved forever in Twilight!  I feel sorry for the 50 couples who planned to have their weddings there this summer.

  • Anonymous

Vacations are great!  I think they are the secret to a happy marriage — at least  for my happy marriage.  Eventually, you have to face reality, but the memories of that time off helps you face it.  Have a good day/week, TeamEC!

  • LaurelLeaf

Golly gee, Ms. Twiheart, we can all sit on the porch with Mr. Cullen and share tea during this hot summer (giggle) and enjoy the calming affects of a porch swing while we discuss the up and downs of Mr. E. Cullen’s relationship woes with Miss Swan!  (sorry, ladies, the heat is getting to me).

Seriously, I’d be hitting a nice margarita (or something stronger) if my main man was up & down in his commitment to me.  I believe that Bella knows without a doubt that Edward loves her, but she has her fears whether he will still love her if she changes.  Heck, whether Edward will come through and change her at all.  Will my beloved go into his noble self sacrificing mode and decide “No” or will he say “I don’t give a hoot (almost as scandalous as golly gee), I am a selfish man, and I want you forever Isabella Marie”?

No wonder Jacob can worm his way into this relationship.  Bella also knows that Jacob Black will not and cannot leave the area due to his wolfy responsiblities.  She may not love him nearly as much, but at least she knows young Jake is mindlessly in love with her and is less likely to leave her…

…except for that imprinting thing…well, then our Bella will get her heart ripped out again.  What to do, Bella?  Up & down.  Do this?  Do that?  Well, we all know that making a decision finally is a big relief!  And she makes the correct choice.  Hooray!

  • TeamEC1918

I agree. The hubby n I got to relax n enjoy each others company

    Hi LG, how are you?

  • Anonymous

Hi Ladies, settled but still have things to do to be comfortable… Wow I can’t believe I missed  a fair number of the best chapters… I haven’t read this one again… but I think everyone has said what needed to be said.  Edward has one of the biggest hearts and what man is going to sit and take in what he did only our Edward would…. Edward has always taken in Bella’s feelings about Jake right from the very beginning but always knew that she was his no matter what.  Bella just needed to actually beable to grow up enough to tell Jake the way she feels once again.  Mrs EC said it above in the finally paragraphy. If Jake and Bella were meant to be togeather he would have imprinted on her

  • jite4vanquish

I agree with you teamedwardsince77….I wondered about the reshoot of this scene and how much of it changed from the original shoot. I also love the way Robert and Taylor portrayed their characters so true to the book. I thought it would be difficult to show the audience how their conversation would be more like a dream to Bella, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. The camera would show Bella’s face occasionally and the audience seemed to get the idea…..of course most of us probably read the book anyway…..hahaha.

  • TeamEC1918

Hi LG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad you can join our family again :) ))) we miss u terribly

  • twiheart

Welcome home, Lovinggrandmother.  You are point on about Edward.  If all the men in the world would be just a portion of what our manvamp is, the women of the world would rejoice.  For all us that have great hubby’s, I’m sure there is a little bit of Edward in all of them.

How’s the weather there, LG.  I understand the midwest is under a dangerous heat alert.  My land, they have already been bombarded with it this summer.  We are having the coolest summer I remember, but currently delightful.  Had one day of 91 and the next 55.  Go figure.    Glad to see your avi back with us.

Edward is  is a saint, but it would have been interesting to see a three legged dog. LOL

  • LaurelLeaf

Snort!  Yeah, here we are eagerly reading and writing to our Twi-sisters/17 Awhile Gals on the computer rather than enjoying (also read as ‘wilting in’) the summer days and often, muggy nights.  Funny.

You are right that these characters are not perfect but they are so believable in their ways that they seem real and we care about them.  That is a good book, my friends.  I’m glad I am not the only one that felt that Charlie was something of an underachiever in the Dad Dept.  I love him, but to be so often negligent of his only child is really sad.  It’s great to enjoy fishing and watching TV sports, but do try to talk to your daughter some time during the day!  Don’t just tell her to hang out with Jake!

And yup, our beloved Edward can be ‘morose’ at times.  Lighten up, Mr. Cullen!  Bella is in your life and everything shines because of her.  Stop and smell those roses!
