This past Friday night (as we all know) tons of different outlets held their own personal New Moon midnight DVD parties. Twilight Saga screen writer Melissa Rosenburg was present at the New Moon party at Fred Meyer in Seattle. She spoke about the topic on everyone’s lips: Breaking Dawn -

How do you condense an 800-page book into a two hour movie?

MR: “Very carefully. You start with, and you end with, what is the emotional journey for these characters. That is the most important thing to capture, that is the only thing to capture. Everything else is up for grabs, but you must take these characters on the same emotional journey that they took in the book, and hence take the audience on the same emotional journey that they took in the book and that’s the goal, you hope that you achieve that. some people would say I did, some people would say I don’t.”

Do you get any feedback from the fans when you, for example.. cut certain scenes?

MR: “I have a fan site, and the fans will weigh in and say wow! you’ve cut too many things out.. or say I’ve done a fantastic job. They are very kind on my site, there are other sites I know that I don’t read, because I can’t handle that kind of intensity. You can’t make all the fans happy, you try to make as many as possible happy.”
How is that going to be a challenge for the last one? (‘Breaking Dawn’) because as you know, that’s the big one.

MR: “It’s the big one, it’s gonna be a big challenge, and I guarantee you that not all of the fans will be happy, and I guarantee you some of them will be.
You have to give up the ideal of making everybody happy, it’s just not gonna happen, but you hope you make the majority happy. Again, for that last book it is about taking that specific character Bella on her journey. It’s a big journey, it’s a massive change for her, and you hope to realize that.”

What did director Chris Weitz bring to ‘New Moon’ that you think was valuable to the series?
MR: “He was so good. He opened up the franchise. He opened it into this sweeping epic story. Twilight was a very intimate personal movie. it was a small movie, it had almost an independent feel to it. Chris made it into a beautiful spectacle, he really expanded it, expanded the world of it.”

Going back to ’Breaking Dawn’, how far along are you in the planning, with production coming up pretty soon?

MR: “It’s coming up very soon, it’s all deep into the discussions and working on the story, and figuring out what it’s gonna be… we’re deep in the middle of it.”

Any word on when it will “officially” be green-lit?

MR: “I don’t know, but obviously soon.. vampires aren’t supposed to age, so you know.”

Can you talk about the fan craze surrounding the main characters Bella and Edward, and how it’s carried over to real life for these actors? How do they handle it?

MR: “I don’t know how they handle it frankly, it’s a lot to have coming at you, I can’t even begin to imagine. I have a little bit coming at me and it’s almost too much. Can’t even fathom what it is like, I hope they get to have a semblance of a real life.”

Finally, can you give me one word to describe ’Twilight’ fans?

MR: “Passionate.. for sure.”

So let me get this straight. She’s really going to mush 800 pages into 2 hours? I’m done. At the risk of jeopardizing my position here, I will leave this one alone. I have too much profanity on the tip of my tongue and there are young readers here, so I’ll leave it to you all, to handle this one…

I looked her FB page up and a girl from New York wrote her a REALLY good post,anf quite long, about how she needs to put the intenseness and love story of E & B in the movies,more and pleading with her. She also told her to look at EM.org,and see the comments. I don't know who she was. I have her name in my friends list,but I have to wait for confirmation of her acceptance as my friend.——— FB thing. First-i have to agree with above post from Christyleigh3.

Second, i dug up another interview posted on March 18th (so it's very recent) with MR and reporter from Seattle Times, in with many interesting questions are asked. Among them, there is a question if BD should be split into 2 movies; MR answer ( and I quote) is: “I personally feel there's too much story to try to do it in one. The hope is to do it in two, but that's still under discussion.” This particular interview is also touches in her work relationship with SM, and her thoughts on who the new director should be.

I am not trying to preform a redemption for MR here, but we all know how many things can and are taken out of context with certain reporters and/or regular people doing Q &A at a busy setting such as DVD release party. All I am saying-have hope guys! I personally choose to sit back and relax and wait for official new from Summit. EXACTLY! The LOTR films are absolutely adored not just by fans, but by the general audience as well! I hate the way movie industry people try to act like it has to either please the fans OR the general audience and like its impossible to do both at the same time! LOTR is proof it can be done! No matter how the long the movie is if you just stick to the books as much as possible like Peter Jackson did it will be even more successful and well received by everyone!

You CAN please book fans and general movie-goers at the same time. You just need someone willing to put in the effort and that has enough passion for the original stories to want to make it happen.

With LOTR Peter Jackson really grew up loving the books so by the time they finally decided to make them into movies he had already built up the same level of passion for the books as any average LOTR fan has. We just haven't been lucky enough with Twilight or HP to find anyone who is that passionate about the books to really fight the studios to make sure its done right.

Like you said FAN DIRECTS MOVIE=SUCCESS FOR EVERYONE!!!

The Other Minister scene wasn't included, but it wasn't really needed. Although they at least should have had him in one scene like when he comes to the Burrow to talk to Harry since they didn't include Dumbledore's funeral at all (another HUGE mistake). Leaving Rufus Scrimegour out of HBP entirely, but keeping him in DH will cause confusion because people will have no idea the reason for all of the animosity between he and Harry.

One of their worst mistakes has been leaving Dobby out of every movie since Chamber of Secrets despite his presence and closeness to Harry in the books. Now him showing up to save Harry and Harry's despair over his death in Deathly Hallows won't have the same impact and won't make sense to most people. Remember Dobby's death is a crucial turning point and the catalyst for Harry's decision of horcruxes or hallows!

If it's got to be one movie, I also vote for a 3-hour-er. Or 2:50:00 would suffice. Stick to the story too.

I vote for a 3-1/2 hour movie! Heck, I watched all 12 hours of the BBC's adapatation of Emily Bronte's “Jane Eyre”. I can sit my happy but in a theatre seat with my soda and popcorn for three and a half hours! It can be done, and it should be done.

Relax people…it sounds like MR was trying to avoid giving too much information about Breaking Dawn when the question arose…Summit hasn't confirmed anything (about making 1 movie or 2)and I doubt they are going to do it through the screenwriter…
Let's look at the facts. One, Summit likes making a lot of money out of a small investment…even though New Moon had a bigger budget than Twilight, and Eclipse even bigger than the previous two, they are still small films in comparison to other franchises. Two, the principle actors have said they have 6 months of their schedule cleared and not 3! Three, in case some of you didn't notice, the DVD extra's were distributed-if you want “all” the interviews and delelted scenes and extended scenes and featurette of Eclipse, you're going to have to buy 3 or 4 dvd's from different sources (Target, Walmart, Borders, etc). Hollywood studios are greedy and I doubt that Summit will let the current Twilight fenomenon slip through their hands by wasting a precious opportunity of making bank by providing 2 movies instead of 1.

I am very disappointed in this, There is so many wonderful things in that book even life changing. That serious not only saved my life, changed it and brought amazing wonderful people into my life. I have looked forward to this it's my favorite the last harry potter book is indeed being made into two movies, so I don't see why summit can't do the same thing with twilight. I mean HELLOoooo there are plenty of fans out there willing to pay HUGE DOLLARS FOR MORE TWILIGHT I AM SCREAMS CRIES BEGS MY GOD SOMEONE HAVE A HEART HERE AND MAKE THAT WOMEN SEE REASON.

This is crazy! It should be two movies with the first being the two we love sooo much having their intimate moments and all that leads up to that and the after effects. It should cut when jacob imprints. Then the second movie picks up with how things lead out afterwards through the end of the book. There's enough action in the front of the book to make one GREAT love story movie with the two we love to watch on screen and would make millions of dollars for them then the second would be soooo action packed that it would draw millions more to see the whole drama unfold. They are just giving money away by not making two films out of the last book. They know how the fans are about the movies and it's not like two movies could hurt them in any way. Just get the directors and make the darn movies! Back to back….two different directors….same characters. Not very hard! Then space them a about six months apart. Done deal. What do yall think?
