An “Eclipse” Exclusive:
If you’ve only been watching the “Twilight” movies or read the first two books, don’t be shocked that you have no idea who Bree Tanner is. In fact, don’t be upset if you read “Eclipse” and still have no idea who she is. Tanner is a character introduced a startlingly short amount of time before she dies in “Eclipse” and could be considered (to everyone except Stephenie Meyer) to be a throwaway character.

A Short Life:
Tanner is only introduced 10 pages before she is killed off in Victoria’s war against the Cullens and the Quileute werewolf tribe. However, of all the newborn vampires discussed in “Eclipse,” Tanner was one of the few to be named and introduced to the readers. Unfortunately, it didn’t take very long after she was turned into a vampire for her to meet her end … again.

Dramatic Death Scene:
It turns out Tanner isn’t the best newborn vampire among them all, and she isn’t a big fan of killing innocents and drinking their blood. She tries to join forces with the Cullen clan and adapt to their “vegetarian vampire” lifestyle, but ends up being killed by Felix on the orders of Jane, a member of the Volturi guard (played by Dakota Fanning in the film), in the final battle.

Newborn Vampires:
A big part of the story in “Eclipse” surrounds the bad-girl vampire Victoria creating an army of newborn vampires in the Seattle area so she can wage war on Edward Cullen, who killed her beau James way back in “Twilight.” When a vampire is first created, it is at its strongest, so Victoria went around recklessly creating vampires so she could have an extremely powerful army behind her. Tanner was just one of the fatalities.

Seattle:
The trouble with the first-person perspective of “The Twilight Saga” is that the reader can’t read what is happening firsthand beyond what Bella Swan sees with her own eyes. Much like “Midnight Sun” gave (some) of the details behind what happened elsewhere in “Twilight,” “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” will show what happened in Seattle with Victoria during “Eclipse.” But since much of “Eclipse” is devoted to the characters wondering what exactly was going on in Seattle, seeing it through the eyes of a secondary character like Tanner is a smart companion piece to the book.

Unseen First Life:
Unfortunately for Tanner, the world will never know what happened to her before she became a vampire. She was introduced into “Eclipse” after she was a newborn and “The Short Second Life” will start off the same way. There is a chance of flashbacks telling about her life before becoming a vampire, but the way Meyer described the novella on her Web site made it seem as though Tanner was the narrator solely so the reader could see what went on in Seattle, not to learn her past.

In The Movies:
“Eclipse” director David Slade at least had more of a heads-up than fans and retailers did about “The Short Second Life,” and he cast 14-year-old Jodelle Ferland in the role. Slade and Ferland, as well as Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria) and Xavier Samuel (Riley), were given advance copies of the book to read so they could have a complete knowledge of what went on in Seattle for the film.

I’m pretty excited for this! A tad bit disappointed that Midnight Sun wasn’t finished before starting a new project that is lined with the Twilight Saga. BUT I am happy about it nonetheless!

Ah Robin if you would go back and read again, this story was written before Twilight! real fans like myself are happy she is publishing again, seems to me that all you care about is MS, a true fan would what her to continue to write on what ever subject.

I didn't hear anything about fans boycotting it but that is really crazy.Not everyone here calls themselves twihards.Some are probably just fans of the movie or cast.I don't think it is really fair to to judge who is and is not a real fan.

Yeah they started the show when they did because of Twilight's popularity and they both share a music supervisor.However VD predates Twilight by far as do many other vampire romances.

I'm glad this is coming out. I'm not interested in Bree, specfically, but I do think that this is our glimpse into Victoria's massive undertaking in creating a new born army to get at Bella. Victoria's character is diabolical and I can't wait to get a little more insight into that!

As for all fo the comments on Midnight Sun… I think we all know that everyone wants to see that finished. But I am a fan of Stephenie's work and the series as a whole. I'm really just very excited to see anything added to it. I'm also really glad that this story was written along side the others, before Twilight was released and before the media pressure and frenzy got to Stephenie.

Well, I guess we are all entitled to our opinions and thanks for sharing yours.

I think when you get fans as passionate as we are though, you are always going to get very strong and very mixed reactions–we wouldn't really wouldn't be fans if we didn't care so much.

I don't believe people are 'whining' or 'complaining' on here–just expressing their initial reactions upon hearing this news. Perhaps in time, their feelings on the topic may change. Who knows?

Speaking for myself, I was very surprised (and a little disappointed) to hear SM is releasing a book based on such a small (insignificant some might think) character. It sort of makes me nervous to think she may not ever release Midnight Sun because she was spooked by the internet leak a while back.

I do believe there is just naturally a greater interest in reading further material on Edward, as the saga is told predominately from Bella's perspective.

It was a little condescending to re-post SM's comments on the topic based solely on your belief that people here didn't take the time to read it. Honestly speaking, I did read it–and it did not change my feelings about the topic at all although I enjoyed reading how SM came to write the Bree book.

Like I said before, we're all such passionate fans here and entitled to our own opinions so I don't think your ear-bashing was entirely fair.

I've read the all of The Vampire Diaries books and I have to say the first one is a little slow, but by book 3 you just want to know the ending! Some fans don't read book 4 because they dont think of it as part of the set. Im even reading The Vampire Diaries: The Return and they are quite different from the original ones, but still good! In a way with the books and show your getting two stories for the price of one, if you know what I mean!

I've also been starting to read the Sookie Stackhouse novels. True, I've only read the first one but im getting there! Just by chance have you ever read the Darke Academy books by Gabriella Poole?

My prediction: she's working on Midnight Sun as we fued over it…♥…and it will show up on bookshelves on day as a … SURPRISE!!! Because 1 – she does love her fans and wants to see them happy, and 2 – she wants to see it finished as much as we do.

Writers can easily work on more than 1 project at a time (hence, my prediction). And if I were working on something that 40,000,000 people were screaming and arguing over, I wouldn't say a word until it was finished. There's no pleasure when people 'demanded' for a piece to be written, but they do enjoy publishing for their fans. So, it will happen, we just need to hang in there…

In the meantime, she has written (or outlined at least) books for Bree, Leah, Quil and even one for Renesmee she said. It's possible we'll get those on the shelves while we're waiting. What if this is SM's way of saying…”I know you're waiting, I'm writting, so here's more stories until then.”

It wouldn't surprise me if Stephenie did short stories on a lot of the characters. Some interested me, and some were easy to move on from, so I'm not sure which ones I'd pick up…maybe all? Who knows…

I know it's hard to read so much demand for MS, but it's like half a cookie was dangled in front of fans, and some have a hard time letting it sit there until the rest is handed out. It's just one of those things that we'll have to ride-out until MS shows up on bookshelves one day as a SURPRISE for readers. (which I do believe will happen – mark my words) ♥

I don't see how she could tell Alice's story from her POV, since Alice remembers nothing. Maybe she'd have James tell it, or that assylum doctor who hid her? Hmmmm…

My post was about the fact that people, including LMCullen, who made the post, are complaining that she “STARTED” a new project before she finished Midnight Sun, which, as she clearly stated, is completely untrue. I reposted the Stephanie Meyer comments because it's much easier that way than to tell people to go look for them. I'm sorry that you're defensive and felt that was condescending, but that's your problem. Grow up

Also, I don't really think Stephanie Meyer would publish a bunch of “insignificant” details about an “insignificant” person. She merely loves her characters and feels her FANS may love to learn about them too. It will give us insight into what was going on in the newborns world. It's not insignificant if you're into Twilight enough to want to learn more about the world they live in.

I'm not at all the one with the hate nor the one turning this site into a “war zone”. That came from the people who have nothing better to do than complain about non truths. Hormones have nothing to do with it. So to all you fun, peaceful, loving children on this site, PEACE OUT!
