The Twilight Saga: Eclipse DVD/Blu-Ray Sells 3 Million Copies in the First Two Days!

The third instalment in the Twilight Saga franchise, Eclipse, was released on DVD and Blu ray on Saturday, December 6, and reached over 3 million in copies sold in two days. Which falls short when compared to Twilight and New Moon’s opening sales -

Twilight Eclipse DVD and Blu-Ray sales numbers have just been released, and while they’re unequivocally strong, the figures don’t align with that of the previous installments in the Twilight Saga.movie series

Eclipse’s Home Video Market debut commenced at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, December 4th, 2010, trading in the usual Tuesday release that has become customary for DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

Like the past Twilight movies, this effectively allowed fans of the series, many of which are either in school or work, to organize release parties and/or stay up late to purchase their copy of Eclipse right away.

According to Summit Entertainment, Twilight Eclipse sold slight more than 3 million Blu-Ray and DVD copies together during its first two days of release, December 4, 2010 and December 5, 2010. That is substantially less than both the number of units Twilight sold during its first two days of release in 2009, as well as what Twilight New Moon sold just earlier this year.

For comparisons sake, 3.8 million copies of Twilight were snatched up during its first two days of release 2009, and Twilight New Moon sold just slightly more than 4 million copies through its first two days on the market, following its release on March 23rd, 2010.

While this might come as a surprise to many, it’s very important to note that Twilight (2008) and Twilight New Moon made their DVD and Blu-Ray debut during the month of March, versus December release for Twilight Eclipse.

The change in the season presents drastic changes in the market, and the December frame is incredibly more crowded than March, which is immediately evident by the release of The Last Airbender, and Knight and Day, but even more importantly the Home Media Market premiere of Inception and Shrek 4 just yesterday.

get the dvd n bluray pack from target. I unfortunately havent been able to get mine either due to low funds and still not sure when i will, maybe my hubby will get it for me for x mas

IT’s the BEST one out so far.. I don’t get it.. I got the last copy of the DVD / BLU Ray at my Target at 11am .. How isn’t it beating the other 2?

Some people might be waiting for Christmas though! Take me for example, I bought Twilight and New Moon the same day they were released. But for Eclipse I kinda just think well it’s Christmas in just over 2 weeks, might aswell save my money and get my Gran to buy it instead. Now I know she’ll already have it in BUT not all family members will have finished their Christmas shopping yet, so some people might just be waiting on it until Christmas if you get what I mean!

Speaking of Christmas……..excited!!! I hope they show Bella and Edward giving Renesmee her locket and mp3 on Christmas in BD!

I got the Target collectors edition, the commentary with R/K is really funny, haven’t listened to SM/WG’s yet, I don’t have a Blu-ray but love my dvds..:))

Summit is screwing things up by waiting until Nov. for BD1&2!!! They need to do June 30th again [Eclipse made more than NM] and have the DVD ready for the holidays. [look at the numbers - they're awesome] Come on production company! Slade was able to pull it off with lots of CGI involved…and there won’t be too much more until BD2…you have time!!! Pleeeeeeease….♥

do the numbers include itunes? curious….. because i bought the itunes in HD and then a blue ray/combo disc the other dvd is only in Standard Definition, so not as clear as HD or blue ray of course. i don’t even own a blue ray yet, but plan to get one for my husband for christmas. i know i am crazy buying several copies, but wasn’t sure which was the best one… i can never have too many copies.

agree. with it coming out this close to christmas a lot of people were probably told not to get it and have it be a christmas present by their family. my mom asked if i wanted it and i was like….already beat you to it and got it the day it came out! lol

probabl yit has todo with the fact that new moon had like 100 different versions so we had to buy every single one to watch ALL the special features LOL!!!

I live in Minnesota and we had a snow storm that night that shut down most roads. I bet a huge amount of girls could not get their parents to drive them out in that and the next day was the same. Everyone was trying to plow out. It would have been better numbers from here if people we able to get to the stores.

I was at Target last night and looking for my second copy of Eclipse. THEY HAVE THE HARD COPY!!!! It has postcard size still, similar to the ones that came in Twilight. It’s looks cool.

I got my copy on December 4th at 12:01am at Walmart and picked up a copy for a Christmas present for my mom too

well, I’m going to be honest here, even if it will raise a lot of hate against me, but I’m not at all surprised it did not do that well, because to my eyes it’s clearly the worst of the series so far. I mean, they butchered the book completely, Bella is bitchy, shouts all the time at those around her that love her (WHEN in all the book would Bella say to Jacob “YOU!” on such a tone, or to Edward “Let me go!” huh? Bella is fragile and shy, she would never ever do such a thing or have such a bitchy crappy unpolite behaviour), and what about that god awful speech at the end about how comfortable she feels as a vamp and it’s not about you, it’s about me???? Hello, plot catastrophe much? A freind of mine watched the movie with me and she was like “Lokk, I’m sorry, maybe I’m stupid or something, but I really don’t get it why these 2 guys love Bella so much!! ” and after I watched it like 10 times, I was also like “Yeah, you’re right, I don’t know that either”. Book Bella is selfless, good, shy, loving, warm…movie Bella is bitchy, a liar, a cheat, pretty cold, self-centered (one scene she’s with broken Jacob, the next she’s in the meadow discussing wedding plans with Edward, as if poor JAcob didn’t matter at all, “Oh, he’ll be alright, don’t worry”). Awful, awful! So nope, not buying the DVD, even if it has the robsten comment on it…I’m gonna wait a few weeks and then get it at a third of the actual price,just so I have in my collection. Scummit, Melissa, however made the decisions for Eclipse, I hope the bad earnings for the DVD give you some idea what you did so terribly wrong. I’m not buying the DVd to encourage you to do such crappy Twilight films, ok?? Get your dollars from other suckers, not from me.
